Google Ads for Kitchen Remodelers: Three Campaigns, In This Order

Google Ads for Kitchen Remodelers: Three Campaigns, In This Order

Google Ads for kitchen remodellers is one of the highest-leverage channels available — and one of the easiest places to set $5,000 on fire if you launch the wrong campaign type first. Three campaigns, in this order. Master each before adding the next.

Campaign 1 — Local Service Ads (start here, ignore everything else)

Local Service Ads are not regular Google Ads. They're a separate product, cost-per-lead instead of cost-per-click, and Google does the verification work (license, insurance, background check). They sit above regular ads — first thing the searcher sees. For kitchen remodellers in mid-size metros, expect $40-110 per lead. Roughly 25% of those leads will be junk; Google refunds disputed ones within 7 days if you actually file the disputes.

Campaign 2 — Search Ads on high-intent keywords

Only after LSAs are running profitably should you add regular Search campaigns. Target a tight set of 'transactional' keywords — the ones where someone is ready to spend money. 'Kitchen remodel cost [city]', 'kitchen renovation contractor [city]', 'kitchen designer near me'. Avoid informational keywords ('how much does a kitchen remodel cost'). They look related but pull tire-kickers, not buyers.

Match types, in this order

  • Phrase match for the first 30 days. Tight control over which queries trigger your ad.
  • Broad match only after you have 90 days of conversion data. Google's machine learning needs that data to broad-match intelligently.
  • Exact match is mostly a trap in 2026 — Google now treats exact match as a close variant. Use phrase instead.
  • Negative keywords are non-negotiable. Add 'jobs', 'salary', 'DIY', 'cheap', 'free' as negative on day one.

Campaign 3 — Performance Max (last, and only for established advertisers)

Performance Max is Google's AI-driven catch-all that runs across Search, Display, YouTube, Discovery, and Gmail simultaneously. It works — but only if you have 6+ months of conversion data feeding it. Launching PMax cold burns money. Most contractors who 'tried Google Ads and it didn't work' had a PMax campaign running before they had conversion data, and Google's algorithm optimized for whoever clicked, not whoever converted.

Conversion tracking — the part that actually determines if any of this works

If you're not tracking phone calls from ads as conversions, none of the above matters. Google Ads can't optimize without conversion data, and form submissions are only 30% of contractor leads — the rest are calls. Set up call tracking via Google's own call extensions, or use CallRail and feed its conversion events back into Google Ads. Without this, you're flying blind.

The honest budget tier ladder

  • $0-500/month: skip Google Ads entirely. The setup overhead and learning curve aren't worth it. Run only LSAs (cost-per-lead, no setup).
  • $500-2,000/month: LSAs only, maximize spend until you cap out leads.
  • $2,000-5,000/month: LSAs + a single tight phrase-match Search campaign on 3-5 transactional keywords.
  • $5,000+/month: LSAs + Search + start collecting data toward a Performance Max launch at month 6.

What to do this week

  1. 01Verify your LSA listing if you haven't yet — the license + insurance + background check takes 5-7 business days.
  2. 02If LSAs are already running, add the Friday dispute block to your calendar.
  3. 03Set up CallRail or Google's call-extension tracking before any Search campaign launches.
  4. 04Audit your current Google Ads spend. If you have a PMax campaign running under 6 months in, pause it. Move that budget to LSAs.
Google's products are designed to spend your budget. Your job is to give them the conversion data they need to spend it on the right clicks.
