How do I set up a Google Business Profile for a contractor?

Short answer

Create the profile at google.com/business, choose the correct primary category (e.g. General Contractor, Kitchen Remodeler), and if you have no storefront set a service area instead of an address. Then complete every field — services with keyword descriptions, hours, photos — and verify. A half-finished profile won't rank; a complete, verified one is the single highest-ROI local SEO move a contractor can make.

Setup steps

  1. 01Sign up at google.com/business and search for your business in case a listing already exists to claim.
  2. 02Pick the most specific primary category, then add secondary categories for each service line.
  3. 03No public storefront? Hide the address and define your service-area cities.
  4. 04Fill in every service with its own keyword-rich description — Google indexes this text.
  5. 05Add real photos, set hours, add your website and phone (matching your site exactly), then verify.

Once it's live, keep it active: post updates, add photos, and answer questions. Dormant profiles lose to active ones with the same categories.
